The 2011 Wyoming Legislature has recessed! The number of proposed pieces of legislation that made it to the floors of the House and Senate reached a historical high. There were several bills passed that impact social work services, are relevant social issues and/or effect the client populations served by social workers. There were a variety of 'social issue' bills that did not complete the process in this legislative cycle, but will likely make future appearances. NASW Wyoming will continue to monitor legislative issues in Wyoming and keep members informed!
NHSC Announces New Loan Repayment Cycle
(11/30/10) The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) has announced a new cycle of applications for its student loan repayment program. Health practitioners in the NHSC loan repayment program work various types of assignments to serve their loan obligations. All clinicians must practice in a designated Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) for the clinician's discipline. Physicians, nurses, designated mental health professionals (including clinical social workers) and others are eligible for the competitive program. See NHSC.hrsa.gov for more information on the application process. (ELIGIBLE SITES IN WYOMING!)
Since 1972, more than 30,000 clinicians have served in the Corps, expanding access to health care services for people who live in urban and rural areas where care is scarce. About half of NHSC clinicians work in federally supported Community Health Centers. The NHSC Loan Repayment Program offers clinical social workers a competitive job opportunity in exchange for $50,000 to repay student loans and for 2 years service in a high-need service site.
